I Was Not Looking

© Maja Palra Music Publishing, 2011

This is a song about infatuation. You have a main squeeze. Things are pretty good and life is sweet.
Then, you're driving down the street ... and you see someone -- a friend of yours
is talking with a friend of theirs -- and inside you go into orbit. Wow! Who is that???

I wanted something catchy at the end of the song. I decided a ritardando of a hi-hat roll would do it.
Then, I decided to add bongos and slot drum but did not listen to the other rolls when recording them.
So, they all ritard at a differing pace, creating an intersting effect -- ordered chaos.

Lyrics

When I looked into your eyes, I saw an angel's face.
I wondered, would you look in my direction?
Yes, I've come to realize there is something out of place.
You're the someone who could end my indecision.

I don't mean to rush ahead but I could not let you go
Without saying you're the girl I may desire.
I hope I don't chase you away because I'd like for you to stay
To discover if we're meant for one another.

Just like learning to fly,
We'll never know until we try.

I was not looking you just walked into my life
And now I'm blinded by what seems to be the light
That melts my heart away.

This might be my only chance. So, I'm laying it on the line
Hoping you will easily see my true meaning
Because I'd never do you harm. It's just I'm captured with your charm
And I need to know if I am self-deceiving.

I've said more than I should say. Still, I had to let you know,
Had to make you understand this spell I'm under
And I hope there'll come a day, not too far away ...
I've said too much already, I'll just wonder.

How I wish that you would smile
And say you'll try it for a while.

I was not looking you just walked into my life
And now I'm blinded by what seems to be the light.
I was not looking you just walked into my life
And now I'm blinded by what seems to be your light
That melts my heart away.

Bongos and Jembe

Slot Drum: a gift from my sister, Rosemary.
Every one is different and I love the sounds
this one makes.

Claves: a gift from my sister, Linda.
She made these while in the Girl Scouts
and have a great tone.
