Pope was an English poet born in the 17th century. I heard this segment years ago and immediately wrote a melody, giving me the best chance I'd remember it. One evening, just before going to press, I entertained the thought of including an epilogue. This poem came to mind.
A search of the internet revealed the author. A trip to the library, with help from a competent librarian, produced a book, and I had my reference. This adaptation is taken from Pope's An Essay On Man, Epistle II, Section V.
Sin is a monster of such awful
mien
That to be hated needs only to be seen
But seen too often, familiar with face,
We endure, pity, embrace.
