- Imagine the fun we'll have on a national scale if mail-in voting is mandatory. Did you know
the Post Office "is warning states coast to coast
that it cannot guarantee all ballots cast by mail for the November
election will arrive in time to be counted, even if mailed by state deadlines,
raising the possibility that millions of voters could be disenfranchised?"
On the flip side, the Postmaster General testified before Congress that the USPS will have no problem handling the volume of mail-in ballots. So, which is it?
The Washington Post also has an interesting article on the subject. I get it that "state and local officials across the country are making difficult decisions about how to enable citizens to vote without jeopardizing their health." However, do you really want to take the chance of dropping your ballot (one of 130+ million) in the mail and having it not be counted?
While considering which way I'd prefer to vote, it occurred to me many if not most of us regularly
- go to the grocery store, Walmart, Lowe's, etc.,
- wear masks and practice social distancing while standing in line at the checkout,
- have our cart full of goodies* scanned and bagged,
- and go our merry way.
* Who knows how many people have touched and breathed on our purchases? And yet, off to the store we go. Would voting in person be any more perilous? I doubt it.
- Although
each state has its own rules,
most likely anyone uncomfortable with voting in person can request an absentee ballot
and vote by mail.
- If there's one thing I'm old school about, it's voting. Trust the U.S. Mail
(run by Congress and our President) if you want to but as for me, thanks but no thanks.
I would prefer to
- put on my mask
- go to my pollling place
- mark my ballot
- hand it to the poll worker
- watch it being fed into the tabulation machine
- and go my merry way.
It is said "a picture is worth a thousand words." I post this one to help alleviate
the mass hysteria against voting in person. This is what social distancing and
wearing masks while waiting in line to vote looks like. Does this look threatening?
Should we vote by mail or in person? The good news is, we already have it both ways.
Let's keep it that way.
