Associate Justice Kavanaugh (JK) Post Confirmation
A Response to a Post On Facebook
No, I don't think JK's appointment to the S. C. scores one for the wrongly convicted,
nor do I think it's a thumb in the eye to all the unfortunate victims of sexual assault.
What won were fairness, due process, the presumption of innocence and the repudiation of mob rule.
Joe (not his real name), try JK's shoes on for size and see how they fit. When you were being considered for promotion to Detective,
would YOU have been ok if some woman came out of the woodwork at the last minute and made an unsubstantiated accusation
of sexual assault from when you were 17? Write back and tell us that it would have been ok with you
being considered unfit for, and denied, promotion
having the community assume your guilt
If you are ok with that, then I am ok with your presumption of guilt for JK.
Anyone else think: "Yes, that sounds fair." and want to chime in and provide a #MeToo comment to say it would be perfectly fine if #YouToo were denied a promotion and had your name and reputation destroyed under similar circumstances?
Is this the standard you want for yourselves and your loved ones -- guilty as accused? I hope not. That might be the world you want to pass on to future generations, but not me. I find it hard to believe ANY of you would put yourself and your loved ones in JK's shoes, and be comfortable having reputations destroyed and careers derailed because one person, with no proof, points and says you or your loved one did thus and so. What's that old saying about being careful what you wish for?
If people don't like JK and/or don't like Trump and/or don't want JK on the Supreme Court,
fine. No problem. I get that -- but to use that as justification to treat JK like he's
Jack the Ripper is just plain wrong.
Here's something that occurred to me:
If JK is innocent of these unsubstantiated allegations
and the *dozens of women who have known him for years, including
two girlfriends,
who testifed to his good character and always being a gentleman, are to be believed
then it would be fair to say that JK is the Poster Boy for how those in the #MeToo
movement say men should treat women -- and this fiasco we saw over the past few weeks is the thanks he gets.
* To date, I've not heard one person in the "Believe Women" crowd say the women
who attested to JK's good reputation regarding his treatment of women should be believed.
It seems to me we are to be selective about which women to believe:
Women who make unsubstantiated accusations of assault are to be believed.
Women who defend those accused of unsubstantiated assault? Not so much.
As a society, we actually used to believe in the principle that an accused is to be presumed innocent. That's how I would want to be treated. How about you? The complete 180 in that principle seen recently is troubling.
