An
opinion piece by Jay Michaelson
appeared at TheDailyBeast.com about a week after Brett Kavanaugh (BK) was confirmed as an Associate Supreme Court Justice.
The colorized picture in the article depicts an ominous background of smoke stacks and billowing clouds of toxic air pollution.
The only thing missing are horns atop BK's head. It's fine to have an opinion that the decisions of the D.C. Circuit and Supreme Courts are bad for the environment. It's not fine to demonize those with whom one disagrees.
The Global Warmers keep telling us the clock is ticking and that our very existence is in peril. The thinking is:
we are all going to die if people like BK aren't stopped.
The problem I have with this type of rhetoric and imaging is that desperate people do desperate things.
As a reminder, the Nazis became expert at depicting Jews as the enemy of the people. The idea was to show them
as evil and threatening, much like the picture of BK shown here.
I heard about the tweet to the right listening to Rush Limbaugh and checked it out.
According to several sources, including
a snope's article:
- a grade school teacher from Minneota posted the tweet
- the school placed the teacher on administrative leave
- the tweet has been deleted
- the FBI is looking into her tweet
- the teacher has subsequently resigned
We're talking about an educated woman here. This wasn't just an individual death threat.
This was a call to arms. These types of matches must be extinguished before they are put
to the hay.
Self-defense becomes the justification for violence. This is the result when those in Congress declare they will "do anything to keep
Judge Kavanaugh off the Supreme Court." People are listening and taking these declarations
as serious queues for extreme action. Those in Congress would do well
to choose their words more carefully, as if those listening will act on what they say.
Dr. Ford and JK have both reported receiving death threats, which is unacceptable.
However, other than the tweet shown here, I have not been able to unearth any copies of emails
nor online posts showing a specific source and threat. Hopefully, law enforcement will get
to the bottom of this and those responsible will be prosecuted.
I do not mean to be flippant, but to paraphrase that great sage, Rodney King:
"Can't we all just get along?" Apparently, not.
