Dr. Christine Blasey Ford named four witnesses who were at a party (more like
a gathering of a few people) where she claims she was sexually assaulted by Brett
Kavanaugh when she was around 15 and he was around 17.
- Ford's first named witness denying any knowledge of the party is Brett Kavanaugh.
In his sworn statement, he flatly denied the allegations, denied any knowledge
of the party to which Ford refers, and said he has never treated her nor any
other woman in the way she described.
- Ford's second named witness denying any knowledge of the party is Mark Judge,
a high school classmate of Kavanaugh. According to
this CBS article, Judge said in his sworn statement to the Senate Judiciary Commitee that he does "not recall the events described by Dr. Ford in her testimony before the US Senate Judiciary Committee today. I never saw Brett act in the manner Dr. Ford describes."
- Ford's third named witness denying any knowledge of the party is Patrick J. Smyth (PJ),
a friend of Kavanaugh.
According to
this CNN article, Smyth said in his sworn statement to the Senate Judiciary Commitee
that he has "no knowledge of the party in question; nor do I have any knowledge
of the allegations of improper conduct [Ford] has leveled against Brett Kavanaugh." He goes on
to say he has "known Brett Kavanaugh since high school and I know him to be a person of great integrity, a great friend, and I have never witnessed any improper conduct by Brett Kavanaugh towards women."
- Ford's fourth named witness denying any knowledge of the party is Leland Ingham Keyser,
Ford's former classmate and lifelong friend. According to
this CNN article, not only does Keyser deny any knowledge
of the party, Keyser's lawyer stated that she "does not know Mr. Kavanaugh and
she has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering where he was present,
with, or without, Dr. Ford." Hmmm.
I find it only fair to mention that according to this Washington Post article, "Keyser said that ... she believes
Ford’s allegation." That's what friends are for, I suppose. However, it's one thing
for Keyser to say to a friend: "I believe you." It's quite another if Keyser had said
she had any recollection of what Ford alleges -- Keyser does not. Ms. Keyser
is obviously a woman of good character -- standing by her friend but being honest
and failing to corroborate being a witness.
All four witnesses testified under oath denying any knowledge of the party.
Lying under oath is risky, as those caught lying under those circumstances can find
themselves wearing orange jumpsuits. The consistency of all four witnesses makes
their testimony credible.
Granted, just because none of the witnesses remember the party does not in and of
itself prove there was no such party -- BUT -- it certainly does not corroberate Ford's
testimony that they were there -- oops.
So, what we have here is only one witness, Ford, who testified about this party
where an alleged assault occurred. The testimony of this single witness included:
- not knowing when the assault occurred
- not knowing where the assault occured
- not knowing how she got to the party nor who might have gone with her
- not knowing how she got home from the party nor who might have returned with her
- naming four people who were at the party, and NONE of them,
including her lifelong friend, corroberated her testimony -- ouch.
On that basis, a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court was almost derailed.
¡Ay, caramba!
