- Our 22nd Amendment, which limits the presidency to two terms, was approved
by Congress in March of 1947. Notice how Congress did not include term limits
for themselves.
- Upon occasion, I hear discussion about repealing the 22nd Amendment.
I recall an attempt (there have been others) that came from Representative
Jose Serrano, a Democrat from New York. He submitted
H.J. RES 5
on Jan 6, 2009, just before Obama took office. Like every other attempt to repeal
the 22nd Amendment, it fell flat.
- As for me, I tend to go back and forth on term limits for political/judicial offices.
- I look at Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, etc. and think: "Yes, we need some form of term limits," including for the Supreme Court.
- Conversely, if the electorate wants to continue electing someone to office, shouldn't that be allowed?
- Is it prudent to have fossils like these run our government?
The tricky balance is allowing a free people to vote for whomever they wish for as many times as they wish versus attempting to avoid the inevitable decline or corruption that occurs when people in seats of great power stay too long. Should we repeal, expand or leave alone the 22nd Amendment? You decide.
