Clare

Clare was my girlfriend all through high school. Not too long after we went our separate ways, I wrote this song. The context is a middle-aged man wondering about his H. S. sweetheart.

Lyrics

Clare, I don't even know who you are or where you're headed any more
But I remember the smile I always looked for
Through those younger, troubled days.
Do you remember them the same?

And Clare, have you found the ones who share your fears and fun?
And since we parted ways, have your days been fine or has life been unkind?
I wonder sometimes: are you feeling at home or all alone?

And all I want is the best for you and to be your friend
And I'd still like to talk with you every now and again.
Are you living wise? Can I help sometimes?
Is it enough your mind is known or how much you can own?

Clare, do you take the time to see what the world needs?
Have you learned to fear your hopes
And bury your ecstasies under the burdens we all share?
Has life been fair?
Would you rather start again or wish your life would never end?

And all I want is the best for you and to be your friend
And I'd still like to sit and talk with you every now and again.
Are you living wise? Can I help sometimes?
In a distant way, may I stay?

Melody says the flute part is the essence of how I feel about Clare. I agree.
